PMD - System for Finite Element Analysis

The PMD (Package for Machine Design) system represents the original set of Fortran programs that provide the solution of general problems of continuum mechanics based on the finite element method (FEM). The development and testing of PMD has been going on systematically since 1977.

The operator of the PMD system is the company VAMET, Ltd together with the Institute of Thermomechanics ASCR.

The fundamental feature of the PMD system is its openness to new problems, methods and means. The basic concept of the system is based on the idea of comprehensive, separate blocks which communicate with each other and are put together according to the requirements of the particular problem.

For solving the typical tasks of engineering practice and projects in the field of continuum mechanics of solids (e.g., heat conduction, thermoelasticity, eigenvalues, seismicity, plasticity) the PMD programs were assembled into problem-oriented modules that are used to carry out the routine calculations.

The PMD system is equipped with a User Manual, Reference Manual and a comprehensive Example Manual.

The PMD/PMD-GFEM system was approved by the Commission's statement No. 5 “Strength calculations of components and pipe systems” from 24/11/2015 for the creation of documents for the safety documentation of the VVER-type nuclear power plants. (Prior to this date, the PMD system was certified by the State Office for Nuclear Safety under the registration number 531.)
